Math Definitions

Next, read pg. 353 and 354 from your textbook. Define all bolded words (skip abscissa) in your notebook (or on your blog if you want to)

origin- the point of intersection of the x and y axis on a coordinate or Cartesian plane

x-axis- the horizontal axis of a graph

y-axis- the vertical axis of a graph

coordinates- shown as pairs of letters and/or numbers used to show position on a coordinate plane or map

x-coordinate- the position of a point according to the x axis

y-coordinate- the position of a point according to the y axis

quadrant- any quarter of a plane divided by an x and y axis
Next, read over pages 349 and 350 in your textbook. Then you can try a couple problems and post this on your blog. Do this by writing the equation for y in terms of x (ex. 3x + y = 7, so y = 7 -3x). Try #13-16 on pg. 351.

13.) 2x+y=6
6/2+x=y 1,4
6-2x=y

14.) 5x+y=7
7-5x=y
7/5+x=y 1,2

15.) 3x+2y=8
8-3x=2y
8/3+x

16.) 2x+5y=10
10-2x=5y

the most current ohio female population is 5,840,878 in 2000.

2. What was the U.S. population of females or males five years ago?
the ohio female population five years ago was 5,620,775.

3. Find the percent increase/decrease.
x/100=220103/5620775 5620775x=22010300 39.25% increase

4. Based on the percent increase/decrease, with a population of 1000 people, how many females or males would there have been five years ago?
528.33 females
5. Find the percent of increase or decrease for these categories:

a) under 5 years old

Percents

You have just graduated college and have found your dream job as a ________ (insert job here - i.e. teacher, writer, actor, pro football player, doctor, nurse, etc.)! Let's pretend you will be making around $1200 per month, depending on overtime, bonuses, etc. Now here is the deal - you need to make sure you manage your money wisely. Answer the following questions:

I am an author. I have my own world known series and I have just agreed for a movie company to make my books into movies and the broadway premiere of the play based on my book is about to premiere in a couple of days!
1) Your rent plus utilities (gas, water, internet, phone, etc.) is $540 a month! What percentage of your monthly income is this?

540/1200=n/100 54000=1200n n=45%

2) You spend about 6% of your income per month on your cell phone bill! What amount is this?

n/1200=6/100 7200=100n n=$72

3) You usually spend around $200 per month on groceries. Find this percentage.

200/1200=n/100 20000=1200n n=16.67%

4) You spend about $40 per week on gas filling your car's gas tank! What percentage of your monthly income is spent on gas?

40/1200=n/100 4000=1200n n=3.33%

5) You like to use the remaining money and split it - using 60% on entertainment (movies, shopping, etc.) and putting the other 40% in savings. About how much money is spent on entertainment and how much is put in savings?

have $348 left.

n/348=60/100 100n=20880 n=$208.80 n/348=40/100 100n=13920 n=$139.2

Challenge☺

Pretend you want to fit a perfectly shaped circular rug into your perfectly square room. All you know right now is that the radius of the rug is "r" feet long. 1) Find the area of the rug, 2) the area of the room and then 3) the area of the room that won't be covered by the rug. (hint -draw a picture!)

1. area of the rug= 3.14rsquared
2. the area of the room=4rsquared
3. area of the room not covered by the rug=4rsquared-3.14rsquared

Assignment 9

Part One:
It's amazing how the gas prices have dropped over this short period of time. Even though I chose a SMART car (it gets 56 mpg!), my gas prices for the week were $20.19. Now that the prices of gas have dropped to $2.20 , using the previous equation 350/mpg*P=T, I would spend $13.75 on gas a week. I would save $6.44 a week on gas. That's an extra $25.76 a month and $334.88 a year! That would be so cool to save this much on gas!

Part Two:
The article that I read was referring to the good and bad in the gas prices falling. The good news is obvious, gas prices are plummeting we are reaping the benefits of more extra money to spend. The bad news lies in the reason for the gas prices dropping. The American Economy has taken a serious blow and the effect of it is cutting the demand for gas and oil. I guess the pocket money is nice, but what's coming a little later for the country is not as good.

Assignment #8

The polynomial video made some things more clear to me. It clairified the fact that combining like terms like x and x squared isn't possible. It also confirmed that adding 3x+4y isn't possible and that it is in it's simplest form. Purplemath.com also taught me that the term without a variable is called a constant term. So in the equation 3m SQUARED+2m+7, 3m squared is the leading term and 7 is the constant term.
